Best and Worst Cities for Asthma
In an annual survey conducted by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, the 100 largest US cities were studied and evaluated. Twelve factors, including asthma prevalence, air quality, and poverty rate, were considered in the ranking. Below are the 5 cities found to be the best for asthma sufferers and the 5 cities found to be the worst.

BEST 5 CITIES FOR ASTHMA
- Cape Coral, FL
Even more impressive than its 400+ miles of canals is Cape Coral's better than average air quality, asthma prevalence, and annual pollen score.
- Seattle, WA
Seattle's above average "100%" public smoke-free laws and low annual pollen level make it easy to enjoy the city's great outdoors.
- Minneapolis, MN
With above average air quality, smoke-free laws, and low pollen score, it's enough to make twin city St. Paul jealous.
- Colorado Springs, CO
With air quality that’s rated above average, Colorado Springs is a breath of fresh air.
- Portland, OR
With low pollen, high air quality, and above average "100%" public smoke-free laws, Portland makes the cut.
WORST 5 CITIES FOR ASTHMA
- St. Louis, MO
Below average air quality and public smoke-free laws, along with low pollen score, earn St. Louis this unfortunate honor.
- Milwaukee, WI
Low air quality and limited smoke-free laws contribute to Milwaukee’s low rating. Fortunately the art museum offers the perfect refuge.
- Birmingham, AL
Birmingham may have below average air quality, but at least it has an above average number of asthma specialists.
- Chattanooga, TN
Lower than average air quality and public smoke-free laws earn Chattanooga its poor rating. Fortunately the views from Lookout Mountain almost make up for it.
- Charlotte, NC
Charlotte’s above average outdoor activities are unfortunately accompanied by below average annual pollen scores, air quality, and smoke-free laws.
